Class 602                                              Ms. LiPuma / Ms. Mosca                                               September 2011

Welcome to the sixth grade!  We trust that your summer vacation has been joyful, restful and full of adventures.  This letter will provide you with information about our class and answer some questions you may have about the upcoming year.  We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves. My name is Valerie LiPuma and I am honored to be your child’s sixth grade Mathematics and Social Studies teacher. This is my sixth full year of teaching and my second year at SISCL. I previously taught fourth and fifth grade and I specialize in teaching Mathematics. My name is Nicole Mosca and I am honored to be your child’s sixth grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher.  This is my fourth full year teaching and my first year at SISCL. I am so very excited to be here! My passion is teaching students the significance of  being successful readers and writers in their every day lives.  We are looking forward to working with you and your child in reaching his or her full potential. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead.

Class Policy and Rules:

Homework:

Homework is an essential aspect of learning and will be assigned every night. Your child should expect to spend between 15 and 30 minutes on each assignment.  If your child misses class (due to illness, afterschool activity, etc.), he or she is responsible for making up the assigned homework, as well as any activities from class that day.  If your child needs help with an assignment or has trouble with an assignment, we are available to help your child. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Grading Policy:

Your child’s grade will be calculated in each subject (Math, ELA, Social Studies) using the following grading policy:

Tests, Quizzes, Projects and Activities:                                      50%

Class work and Participation                                                       25%

Homework:                                                                                  25%

Absences:

If your child is absent, they must bring a written excuse with them upon their return to school, and if they have seen a doctor a doctor’s note.  Attendance is important. What we do in class involves active participation, it is very important that your child attends each day. However, I do realize that sickness, family emergencies, and doctor’s appointments do occur.

Correspondence:

Please feel free to write us a note or call us at the school. We will also have a class website up so you can check homework daily or when your child is absent. You can look for class/school news on the website as well along with any other upcoming activities.  The website is LipumaMosca@educatorpages.com.

Class Rules:

Students are required to be in class at the start of the period.  Your child is required to begin the day by walking in quietly and prepared with his/her books, pencils, assignments (handed in on time) and any other materials that are necessary for the day.  If students are not prepared for class, points will be deducted off of his/her class work grade.

Your child is required to stay in his or her seat when necessary and asked to raise his/her hand when a question/statement arises.  All students must work quietly and complete and hand in all work on time.  It is essential that your child pays attention in class and participation is helpful for his/her grade.

As always, your child is expected to be respectful, responsible and kind to others. . There will be many opportunities for your child to be a leader in the classroom as well as in the school.  If your child is having difficulty with behavior, we will try to solve the problem and I will immediately let you know via phone call if your child is having difficulties. If necessary a conference will be set up to discuss the problem further.
